Bookshelf Makeover, aka Rainbow Bookshelves

I’ve officially gone mad. I have four (or is it five already? I honestly lost count) reviews to write, emails to respond to and job applications to send in and what do I spend my entire morning with? Yes, that’s right. None of the above. Instead, I voluntarily spend three hours rearranging my bookshelf. I’m exhausted and feel a bit dizzy but it was worth every second.

Up until now, I organized my books by the authors’ last name, which was a pretty good solution and made it really easy for me to find whatever I was looking for at a given time. But it was nothing special. And it definitely didn’t look as cheerful as some of the “rainbow bookshelf” photos I’ve seen around the blogosphere in the past year. So I decided to give it a try and create my very own book rainbow this morning. And… well, I love it.

I don’t know how practical it is but at the moment, I couldn’t care less. 😀 I mean, look at all these colours! *flails*

How do you guys organize your bookshelves? Does it bother you if parts of a series or works of the same author are not in order or would you try something like this?

This does look good! But it would drive me crazy if the books weren’t alphabetical by author – plus I would go crazy if the series wasn’t all together. Yep, my bf thinks I’m a little OCD, but thats ok :) And I probably wouldn’t be able to find anything. Cute idea though! I hope it works well for you!

That’s exactly what I’m worried about! I’m a bit OCD when it comes to my books too and I loved the fact that all the series were together. We’ll see how much it bothers me or if I manage to get used to this arrangement. :)

OOh very pretty! I don’t think I could ever go that route, I’m too OCD–or CDO (lol)–to arrange my books in anything but alphabetical order by author’s last name! Still, very pretty! I can admire yours to make up for mine! 😀

Thanks! Yeah, I know, I almost gave up halfway through the blue ones – it just seemed to take ages. It was worth it, though. :)

Ha ha … I saw your picture on Twitter and tried to do it. I did two shelves and was done! I did think about practicality, though, while doing it … it would be a lot harder to find something! Of course, my books are a mess right now anyway, so I’ll live with it for a while. Good job! That must’ve taken forever!

See? That’s the most space-efficient solution. :) I know I should start using my Kindle more but I can’t resist a nice paperback :(

Cool! i actually organize my bookshelf according to author’s last name and the last part of my shelf is for the books that I haven’t read yet but yours really looks cool and definitely colorful!

Oh, pretty! I organize my books by colour as well but I don’t have as many of them so my bookshelf doesn’t look as good as yours!
But I think it’s so much fun to organize books, even if it’s a waste of time, so sometimes I will change it up, by genre, author’s name, or something else – just for fun.

Aw, I’m sure it looks nice. I actually wish I had less white and black ones myself!
And yes, I agree – although it’s very exhausting too!

I know! One of my friends asked me to count them the other day and it turns out I have 318 or something like that. I had no idea I had so many. o.O It’s definitely a good reminder that I don’t need any more books…

I can imagine! I don’t know how many books you have but it took me hours to take these down and put them back again. Judging by the comments lots of people choose to organize theirs by genre and I’ve no idea why I haven’t thought of that before. Although I still prefer this solution, it looks so much more cheerful :)

Wow!! This looks so awesome! Congrats :D! I love the rainbow colours arrangement! Wish that I can do this one day haha xD!

So pretty! I’ve wanted to do a rainbow bookshelf for a while but my OCD tendencies will not settle at the idea of having my series all muddled up! I hope this works for you, it looks so bright and cheerful. :)

It does! :) I was the same when it came to series and not having them in order but it looks so pretty I tried not to care. 😀

It is pretty but it would never work for me. I have my books organized by genre then author then series. I can find any book quickly. It isn’t the most aesthetic method but it is practical.

Wow! So pretty! I’m tempted to do this but I’m not sure how I would feel about splitting up series. I’m definitely considering it though, even though I’ll probably distract myself all the time by staring at them 😉

That’s how I felt too :) I’ve a bit of an OCD when it comes to books and book series but it was soooo pretty I couldn’t resist giving it a try. Let’s hope it works out 😀

I LOVE IT! We’re moving house in three weeks and I’m already casting around for bookshelf organisation ideas and cool bookcase styles and all that stuff. Pfft, who needs to be thinking about prosaic things like wall colours and flooring when you could think about ORGANISING BOOKS?! I might have to try this, I like having my books a bit mixed up (makes me more likely to pick up something at random instead of always veering to the same sections) but still pretty, so it might just be perfect for me! :)
