Bookish New Year’s Resolutions (2013 Edition)

Bookish New Year's Resolutions for 2013

I’ve never really been a New Year’s resolution type of person. At all. I’ve never made any resolutions before because I knew I couldn’t stick with them. However, 2013 is going to be a lot more different than the previous years for a number of reasons. In terms of life in general, 2013 for me will be about starting over, starting out afresh. Graduating from university will be the start of a whole new chapter in my life, which is pretty exciting but quite scary at the same time. It’ll have to start thinking about what to do with my life and I know it’s not going to be easy – but it’s still pretty exciting.

At the same time, I’d like to make some changes in terms of how I run this blog and try to stick with these plans throughout the year:

  1. Since 2013 is about starting afresh, the first thing I’ll try to do is finish all those review books that have been sitting on my bookshelf in the past few months. Some of them have been here for a really long time so it’s time to read them finally. Just to give you an idea of why it’s my main priority at the moment, here’s my review pile…
Books, Biscuits, and Tea Review Pile

Er…… yes. :D It’s scary. So what I’m going to do in January and February is read these books – no more procrastination, no more review requests and feeling guilty for ignoring this pile until I finish them. Which brings us to the second goal on my list, that is:

  2. Cutting back on requesting review books. Working with publishers and authors has been one of my best blogging experiences in the past 16 months but I got to the point where I just need to take things easy for a while. The next few months will be extremely hectic and stressful and I’m trying not to add more pressure to it by having to keep deadlines and such. I’m not saying I’m not going to read review books at all, but
    a) I’m not requesting any until I read the 19 books above (how I’m going to do this is beyond me)
    b) I’ll try to read more of my own books instead of requesting/accepting ARCs all the time.
  3. Setting aside 30 minutes each day for checking out other people’s blog posts and replying comments, no matter how busy I am. It’s actually something I’ve been meaning to do for the past few months but never managed to stick with it. Let’s hope I’ll be able to do it this year! :)
  4. Scheduling blog posts in advance. I’ve been doing this for quite a long time but what I’m planning to do this year is scheduling posts waaaaaaay in advance – not just a few days before the actual day I want to post but hopefully two or three weeks beforehand.
  5. Bring back discussion posts

How about you? Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions? (book related and in general) :)

I love your bookish resolutions, especially bringing back discussion posts! There seem to be so few out there these days which is a real shame. I mean, reviews are great, but that’s not all there is to books, right?
And I am a big fan of scheduling posts in advance myself! It certainly keeps the last-minute-post-panic at bay.
I guess my biggest goal (aka resolution) for the new year is to comment more often on my favorite blogs. I mean, I read all those blog posts but rarely ever take the time to leave a few thoughts *hangs head in shame*. But hey, look … I commented just now, yay!

Yes you did! ;) So you’re definitely doing great. And thank you! <3
That sounds like a great goal to me – I’ll try to comment more as well. I usually try to leave a comment whenever I read someone’s post, I just simply don’t have much time to actually visit people :(

  2. Karin says:

Those sound like good resolutions! I hope that you’ll have fun doing them and they don’t feel like a hassle. Cutting back on review books and reading your own sounds like a good plan in a hectic year. We buy books we are sure we like and I think we need those safe havens when we are in a stressful period. Wish you all the best in 2013.

It does: the question is whether I can stick to it or not :) I can do whatever I want once I graduate but I know the next few months will be super hectic so I really need to stop accepting/requesting new ARCs. Let’s hope I can resist the temptation! xxx

  3. Mama J says:

I’m with you on the checking out blogs and commenting. It’s something I’ve been struggling with due to lack of time but I need to sort myself out!

Same here! Especially visiting people back – it’s really hard when you don’t have much time but let’s hope we can do much better this year. *fingers crossed*

  4. I’m not commenting as much as O used to, so thanks for the reminder :-) And ooh scheduling saves me so much stress, but with the holidays, I’ve fallen way behind.

I cut back on how many books I’m going to read so I can try to read books with more then 300 pages. I’m also going to just read my actual books. No kindle books.

That is the plan. I hope I stick to it.

  6. Ooh yes, need to put aside time to at least check my favourite book blogs daily.

  7. Your resolutions are great! I’m going to comment a lot more than I did last year and be more active with my blogging, rather than just posting reviews and being a ghost the rest of the time.

Best of luck with your goals! Commenting is a great way of getting to know lots of new people so I can definitely recommend it :)
PS. your blog button is the cutest thing ever!

  8. I love your resolutions! I’m especially looking forward to more discussion posts :)

Book-wise, for 2013 I’d also like to read more of my own books. I got a few for Christmas and ones that I’ve bought throughout the year that have just sat on my shelf “until I have a quiet time with no review books to read”, but as you probably know, its never a quiet time! So I’d like to have more time to read some of my own books that I’ve purchased :)

On a personal level, I’m getting married in June, so my goal for the first part of the year is to keep buying/planning things so that I do a few things each month, to spread it all out, and so its not one big rush at the end :)

Hope you are having a lovely week hun xxxxxxxx

Great post. I’m doing a reviewing freeze until we get our current reviews taken care of. Glad I’m not alone in this!

    • Vicky says:

Definitely not! I’ve been meaning to do this for a while but all those new releases in November/December were far too good to say no to :) I hope we can both catch up with our review piles this month!

  10. Bonnie says:

Numbers 1 and 2 are also on my bookish resolution list. I’m dedicating (hopefully just January) to cleaning up my review piles so that I can get back to reading what I want without the deadlines. I put a lot of pressure on myself (too much) in 2012 and I think this will help me get back to the fun part of blogging and the whole reason I started it. Good luck with your resolutions!

  11. I wanted to get my blog regular last year, but only really posted regularly throughout the summer. I would like to do that this year, but college stays pretty hectic for me. I also need to read more of my own books. I feel like I spend more time buying books than actually reading them.

    • Vicky says:

That’s exactly how I felt lately! Uni was so hectic in the past few months that I didn’t have much time to read my own books. And the books just kept coming. Let’s hope we can both catch up with our TBR piles this year – and best of luck with college!

  12. Melissa says:

I should just copy and paste this and put it on my blog! LOL (Of course then I’d be branded a plagarist…LOL) But you get my point…I could not agree more with your resolutions! Good luck!!!

I know how you feel about piled up review books. I’m not allowing myself to request any more until I get through what I have. And then no requesting on Netgalley until I get through all the other books on my bookshelf!

  14. Leah says:

Same here, I’ve decided not to accept new review requests until I’ve finished all 20 books in my review pile! I’m also really really trying not to go nuts with review tours or NetGalley (I just can’t help it sometimes especially when the book is intriguing!)!

In terms of blogging, one my goals this year is to do another blog series on writing or maybe book blogging. :)

    Good luck to us! ;)

  15. The thought of scheduling posts more than a week in advance makes me all light-headed! I would love to be able to do that though, as it would leave me more time to read and comment on other blogs. I want to do more discussion posts too, but I need to think of things to actually discuss first, haha! Good luck with your resolutions! :)

  17. I would love to have your discussion posts back! I really liked to read them. I hope you can find a lot of time to read your review books away, but don’t stress out. Just remember that you love to read and take your time for them :)

  20. Great resolutions Vicky! I need to get better about scheduling in advance and not last minute… because last night I was up to 2:30AM doing my blogoversary post, lol!

I’m also graduating in 2013 (well, hopefully, still waiting to hear back re: my grades from studying abroad) and it is scary, isn’t it? Have to figure out everything in life all over again as we set out as adults. & the ever nagging question: WHAT DO I WANT TO BE?! haha.

Good lucky Vicky & happy new year!

EXACTLY!!!!! And it scares the heck out of me. Knowing that I’ll basically have to start all over again, I mean. And I’ve no idea what I want to do. :|

Here’s to a successful 2013 for both of us! :)

  21. Alexandra Lanc says:

Those all sound like good resolutions! Mine mostly have to do with writing, and getting a few books finished this year that I’ve been working on. :)

That is a big pile of unread books, which makes it understandable that you’re cutting back working with publishers. So many books, so little time!

Congrats on graduating! It’s a big world, but finding your place in it is exciting, and I’m sure that you’ll do well. :)

    Best, and Happy New Year,

    Alexandra~

I found myself nodding my head as I read each and every one of your resolutions! My biggest goal is to run down that TBR tower and satisfy all review commitments. I also told myself that I will read and comment on at least 5 blogs per day! :) Good luck for 2013 and congrats on graduating from uni and starting this new chapter of your lifer!

    • Vicky says:

You’re so lovely, thanks Bonnie! :) Our goals are pretty similar, then! How big is your TBR pile?
Hope we can both get it done quickly!

  23. Alex :) says:

Best of luck with all of your resolutions hun! :)

With regards to commenting on other peoples blogs. I totally need to do that but I always think I don’t have time. If there is a will and a way I will find it this year! :)

Good luck with everything else as well! Huge year for you hun – embrace it! :) xxx

Thanks hun! :) Hope you had a great week! x

  24. Great resolutions! I too need to cut down on the review copies. And I always mean to do more commenting on other blogs!

  25. I schedule my posts 3 weeks out, for example I am currently scheduled until Jan 20th with reviews and Wow’s. I set up my Sunday Posts and then just add books, message etc. It allows me a little freedom and cuts way down on stress. I wish you luck with all of your goals!

    • Vicky says:

3 week?! You’re awesome! I wish I knew how you do it. And that’s exactly what I’m trying to achieve this year :)

      • Here is an easy tip, go back to the books you read BEFORE you began blogging, write a post about a fav author, with mini-reviews, write reviews on books you adored. It doesn’t matter if the book was published four years ago or ten, they may indeed be new to your followers. Try to come up with 10 posts, and schedule them over the course of 2-3 weeks. This is your cushion, then begin writing reviews for books you are currently reading , and posts such as this scheduling them 2-3 weeks from now. Hope this helps, or at least gives you some ideas. It is how I did it. I am reading a book for a review on the 25th of Jan. (holiday company ate up a week, but as you can see I am still 2 weeks ahead and comfortable)

        • Vicky says:

Ha, I know! You’ve always been super organised and I’ve always envied you for that :D Thank you so much for the tips, though – that’s what I’ll do when I’m done with my remaining exams. There are lots of books which I finished before I started blogging but it’s been more than a year so I don’t know how much I’ll remember. But this is what I’m planning to do in two weeks’ time. :) Sit down and schedule a few posts that will last for at least 2 weeks. Then start reading my review books and schedule them too. Let’s hope I won’t fall behind again!

Awesome resolutions, hun! They’re things that are doable and not out of this world unrealistic like some resolutions I’ve seen (or made myself in the past lol). That review pile is something…good luck getting through it! I need to be better at visiting other blogs and commenting too…new blogs but then old favourites too like yours. I read all your posts in my inbox, and I have several others blogs that are the same, but I need to actually visit and TELL you how awesome you are and how much I love your posts. :-)

I know, I’ve made some really stupid resolutions in the past and realised that I need to stay realistic. That’s the only way I can stay focused and not stress. Let’s hope it works! :)

  29. I really like your idea of setting aside a little time each day to read and comment on others blogs. I may make that a resolution of mine. :)

  30. I want to get back to consistently commenting. It is so much easier and faster to do when you don’t let it build up. It’s much more enjoyable as well.
